본 연구는 모래상자상담에서 원형과 상징이 어떻게 나타나고 작용하는지를 탐구한 것이다. 원형은 자아가 무의식을 외면하거나 억압할 때 자기답게 살도록 자아를 깨우는 강력한 힘으로 작용하며, 이러한 기능은 상징적 이미지로 나타난다. 본능과 원형은 상호 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 이들은 인간의 집단무의식을 구성하는 중요한 요소들이다. 원형의 기능은 특히 인생의 주요 전환기, 예를 들어 유년기, 사춘기, 중년기, 노년기 등에 큰 꿈으로 나타나며, 이는 자아와 무의식 간의 균형을 유지하고 통합하는 과정에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 모래상자상담은 무의식과의 대화가 모래그림으로 형상화되는 전체적 정신 과정이다. 이 과정에서 내담자는 모래와 상징물(피겨)을 활용해 자신의 무의식적 내용을 형상화하고, 심리적 자기 조절과 성장을 이루게 된다. 모래상자 꾸미기의 반복적 과정은 내담자가 내면의 자기 조절 장치를 활성화하고 무의식의 내용을 의식에 통합하는 중요한 과정을 제공한다. 본 연구는 모래상자상담에서 원형적 상징들이 어떻게 등장하고 변형되며, 이 과정이 내담자의 치유와 자기실현, 개성화와 관련되는지를 살펴보았다. 이 연구를 통해 모래상자상담의 임상적 활용 가능성에 대해 논의하고자 한다.

This paper explores the archetypes and symbols in Sandtray Therapy, focusing on how these elements manifest within the therapeutic process. Archetypes are powerful forces that compel self-awareness, especially when consciousness neglects or represses the unconscious. These archetypal functions manifest through symbolic images and play significant roles during life transitions, such as early childhood, adolescence, midlife, and old age. The relationship between instincts and archetypes is intricate, with neither reducible to the other. They coexist as aspects of the collective unconscious, forming the foundation of the human psyche. In Sandtray Therapy, clients engage with their unconscious through symbolic images and objects, facilitating a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious minds. This process enables clients to project and integrate their unconscious material, leading to self-regulation and healing. The therapeutic use of sand, figures, and symbols in Sandtray Therapy provides a unique opportunity for clients to explore and integrate archetypal images, such as the maternal archetype, child archetype, hero, and self-archetype. The therapy process involves repetitive sandtray creation, which activates the mind’s self-regulating mechanism, promoting psychological balance and growth. By examining the emergence and transformation of archetypal symbols in the sandtray, this study aims to provide insights into the clinical application of Sandtray Therapy in facilitating self-realization and individuation.
