유아 대상 영어학원에 자녀를 보낼 의향 유무에 따른 어머니의 영어학원에 대한 인식

Mother's perception of willingness to send their children to an English education institute for young children

본 연구는 유아교육기관에 재원 중인 만 2~5세 자녀를 둔 어머니(142명)가 유아 대상 영어학원에 자녀를 보낼 의향이 있는지 또는 없는지에 따른 영어학원에 대한 인식의 차이를 살펴보는 데 목적 이 있다. 선행 연구 및 문헌자료와 어머니 면담을 바탕으로 연구자가 직접 제작한 설문지를 사용하였으며 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어학원에 보낼 의향이 없는 어머니는 의향이 있는 어머니 보다 현재 유아교육기관에 다녀야 하고, 학원에서의 영어교육이 불필요하다고 생각하며, 기관 선택에 있어 자녀의 기질과 성향을 고려하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 영어학원에 보낼 의향이 없는 어머니는 의향이 있는 어머니보다 가정에서 영어교육을 더 많이 실시하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 영어학원에 자녀를 보내고 싶은 어머니는 자녀가 만 5세일 때 보낼 계획을 가장 많이 하고 있었다. 넷째, 영어학원에 보낼 의향이 없는 어머니는 의향이 있는 어머니보다 영어학원에 대해 우려를 더 많이 하였다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로, 어머니들이 유아 대상 영어학원에 대해 비판적인 시각을 가지고 신중한 판단을 할 수 있도록 하며, 나아가 자녀의 건강한 성장과 발달을 위한 바람직한 교육관을 정립할 수 있도록 하는 교육적 지침 및 대안을 마련할 필요가 있다는 시사점을 도출하였다.

The study aimed to examined the differences in perception of English education institutes among mothers of children aged 2 to 5 who are enrolled in early childhood education institutions, based on their willingness to send their children to English education institutes. Using a questionnaire developed by the researcher, which was based on prior research, literature review, and maternal interviews, the following results were obtained. The findings reveal several key differences: first, mothers unwilling to send their childnre to English institutes believe their current early childhood education is sufficient and consider and that English education at academies is unnecessary. They also consider their children's temperament and tendencies when choosing an institution. Second, these mothers tend to provide more English education at home compared to those who are willing to send their children to English institutes.. Third, mothers who want to send their children to English education institutes are more likely to plan to do so when their children reach the age of 5. Fourth, mothers unwilling to send their children to English education institutes express greater concerns about English education institutes in general than mothers who are willing. These findings suggest that educational guidelines and alternatives should be developed to enable mothers to make critical and careful decisions about English education institutes for their children, and furthermore, to foster an environment conducive for their children's healthy growth and development.
