학교문법과 현대문법에서 사용되는 문법 용어 비교분석

The Comparative Analysis of the Grammatical Units Used in School Grammar and in Modern Grammar

이 글은 학교문법과 현대문법에 사용되는 문법 용어를 비교 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 학교문법에 주로 사용되는 문장 5 형식, 문장 25 유형, 영어사전 등을 살펴보고, 어떤 문법 용어들이 사용되었는지 살펴본다. 현대문법은 영어를 기표와 기의로 구분하고, 또한 세분된 문법 성분들을 살펴본다. 그리고 하위범주화와 의미역 관계로 문장이 분석됨을 살펴본다. 그 결과, 문법 용어에 대한 명칭들은 다르지 않지만, 현대문법은 기표와 기의로 구분하고, 문장을 문법 성분에 따라 독립적으로 구분하여 분석한 결과, 문법 용어들이 간단명료하게 정의되는, 반면 학교문법은 그렇지 않다. 학교문법은 영어 학습자들에게 도움을 주는 데 그 목적을 두고, 현대문법은 영어를 간단명료하고 전체적으로 설명력 있게 기술하는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 따라서 현대문법에서 정의하는 문법 용어들이 비록 명료하고 간단하고 논리적이라 할 지라도, 영어의 기본 유형과 기본 어휘를 효율적으로 습득하고자 하는 영어 학습자들에게 필수적으로 요구되는 것은 아니다.

This paper is intended to analyze and compare the grammatical units used in school grammar and in modern grammar. To this end, this paper intvestigates the 5 principal forms of predicates by Onion(1907) and Hosoe(1917), the 25 verb patterns by Honby(1957) and the grammatical information used in Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary(1948) and in Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary(1987), and researches the use of subcategorization and thematic relations as argument structures. The grammatical units used in school grammar are compared with those in modern grammar. The grammatical units used in school grammar are complex, inconsistent, and even confused when compared with those of modern grammar. However, school grammar is still considered helpful for English learners to understand and learn basic sentence patterns and basic words.
