Development and application of Art Therapy Program for Promoting Children’s Resilience

The purpose of this study was to develop an art therapy program to promote resilience in young children and analyze its effectiveness. The subjects of the study were a total of 38 children attending two early childhood education institutions in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, of which 20 children were assigned to the experimental group and 18 in the control group. The experimental group was given a 10-session art program to promote resilience, and the control group was given no treatment. To verify effectiveness, teacher-reported child resilience (emotional, relational, and ability resilience) was measured at pre-, post-, and follow-up (after 1 month). The effect of the art therapy prevention program was examined by conducting two-way ANOVA analysis with group and measurement period as independent variables. As a result, in the experimental group, both the overall score of resilience and the three sub-dimension scores of resilience significantly increased in the post-test compared to the pre-test, and the results were maintained until follow-up test. On the other hand, in the control group, no significant changes were observed. These results shows that activities using art medium and art therapy principles can have a positive impact on promoting resilience in young children.
