Chinese interjections display both heterogeneity and homogeneity. They are heterogeneous in that they follow a development pathway from representing physiological acts to representing mental acts, then finally to representing conversational acts. They are homogeneous in that they all share three properties: signal of a sound, having no content meaning, and syntactic independence. These three properties have determined the peripheral status of interjections in the language system.
