The Impact of Parents' Compassionate Parenting Attitudes on Executive Function Difficulties in Early Adolescence: The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem

연구는 유아기 때 부모의 온정적 양육 태도가 초기청소년기 집행기능 곤란에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 이 관계에서 청소년 자아존중감을 매개효과로 조사하였다. 육아정책연구소 한국아동패널 자료를 활용하여 해당 자료 조사에 참여한 1,147 가구를 분석하였고 청소년 자아존중감의 매개효과 검증을 위해 위계적 회귀분석을 실시, 또한 매개효과의 검증을 위해 부트스트래핑(bootstrapping) 검증을 추가로 실시했다. 연구 결과, 유아기 때 부모의 온정적 양육 태도는 초기 청소년기의 자아존중감을 높이고, 자아존중감은 집행기능 곤란을 감소시키는 매개효과를 보였다. 즉, 유아기 때 부모의 온정적 양육 태도가 높을수록 초기 청소년 시기에 자아존중감이 높아지며, 이는 집행기능 곤란을 감소시키는 데 기여한다. 이러한 결과는 어린 시절 부모의 온정적 양육 태도가 자녀가 성장한 청소년 시기의 자아존중감과 집행기능에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 점을 시사한다.

This study examines the impact of compassionate parenting attitudes during infancy on self-esteem and executive function difficulties in early adolescence, using data from 1,147 households in the Panel Study on Korean Children (2014–2022). Findings revealed that compassionate parenting significantly enhanced adolescents' self-esteem, emphasizing the lasting influence of early parental affection and involvement. Additionally, compassionate parenting was linked to reduced executive function difficulties, improving children's planning, organization, and emotional regulation. Self-esteem was identified as a mediator between compassionate parenting and executive function difficulties, with higher self-esteem mitigating cognitive challenges. These results underscore the importance of parental education and self-esteem interventions for promoting adolescent development. Future research should explore these dynamics across diverse social and cultural contexts.
