The Effect of Bicultural Experience among Adolescents in Multicultural Families on Career Attitudes : The Double Mediating Effects of Self-Esteem and Achievement Motivation

Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate the double mediating effects of self-esteem and achievement motivation to achieve in the impact of bicultural experience among adolescents from multicultural families on career attitudes. Methods: This study analyzed data from the 8th year of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study (MAPS) carried out in 2018, which included 1,124 participants selected for the study. The research model design was based on the PROCESS macro proposed by Hayes and analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program. Results: The results indicated that there was a positive correlation between bicultural experience, career attitude (r=.381, p<.001), self-esteem (r=.388, p<.001), and achievement motivation (r=.406, p<.001). The mediating effects of bicultural experience (B=.21, p<.001), self-esteem (B=.09, p<.001), and achievement motivation (B=.44, p<.001) were confirmed. It was found that bicultural experience directly influenced career attitude. It also affected it indirectly through self-esteem and achievement motivation. Conclusion: The results of this study can be utilized as foundational data for the development of interventions aimed at enhancing the career attitudes of multicultural adolescents by leveraging their self-esteem and achievement motivation.
