Exploring Nature and Elements of Historical Literacy as Practical Historical Consciousness

본 연구에서는 ‘실천적 역사인식으로서 역사 문해력’의 성격과 구성요소를 밝히고자 하였다. 역사 텍스트에서 읽을 수 있는 실천성은 역사 행위자의 실천성, 텍스트 저자의 실천성, 역사 학습자의 실천성으로 나눌 수 있다. ‘역사 행위자의 실천성 읽기’는 역사적 상황에 대한 인식과 행위 분석을 통해 역사적 인물이 이루고자 했던 목적을 파악하는 것이다. ‘텍스트 저자의 실천성 읽기’는 저자가 어떠한 의도로 텍스트 내용을 선택했으며, 왜 그런 방식으로 텍스트를 서술하였는지 추론하는 데 중점을 둔다. ‘역사 학습자의 실천성 읽기’는 학습자가 해결하고자 하는 사회 문제에 비추어 텍스트를 읽는 것이다. 역사 문해력을 구성하는 요소를 추출하는 데에는 실천성의 여러 측면과 지식-탐구-역사의식의 상호작용과 비판적 관점을 고려하였다. 본 연구에서 실천성을 중심으로 역사 문해력의 의미를 구체화해 보려는 시도는 학생들의 삶과 연결된 실제적인 활동을 중심으로 역사 문해력 교수·학습을 재구성하는 데 유의미한 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

This study aims to elucidate the nature and elements of ‘historical literacy as practical historical consciousness’. The practicality discernible in historical texts can be divided into the practicality of historical agents, text authors, and learners. ‘Reading the practicality of the historical agent’ is to explore the purpose he/she wanted to achieve through the recognition of the historical situation and the analysis of his actions. ‘Reading the text author’s practicality’ focuses on inferring why the author selected the contents in the text and construct the text in such way. ‘Reading the learner’s practicality’ is reading the text in light of the social problem he/she is trying to solve. These aspects of practicality and the interaction between knowledge, inquiry and historical consciousness must be considered and the critical perspective should be involved in extracting the elements that constitute historical literacy. This study’s attempt to concretize the meaning of historical literacy around practicality may offer meaningful insights for reconstructing the teaching and learning of historical literacy around activities connected to students’ lives.
