Educational Perspectives on Metaverse Characteristics and Practical Challenges: An Ethnographic Approach Through Educators' Metaverse Focus Groups

연구목적: 이 연구는 메타버스의 교육적 활용에 대한 교육자들의 인식을 분석하고, 메타버스의 속성과 교육적 가치, 사회적 쟁점을 탐구하고자 하였다. 메타버스가 교육 현장에 미칠 영향을 이해하고, 이를 통해 교육적 접근 방식을 고민하는 것이 이 연구의 주요 목적이다. 연구방법: 본 연구는 OO대학교에서 온라인으로 진행된 <메타버스 교육 리더 양성 프로그램>에 참여한 10명의 교육 연구자와 실무자들을 대상으로 한 포커스 그룹에서 수집한 질적 데이터를 분석하였다. 연구결과: 참여자들은 메타버스가 교육에서 창의성 증진, 시공간 제약 해소, 다양한 체험 제공 등 긍정적인 가치를 지닌다고 평가하였다. 그러나 메타버스의 활용이 정체성 혼란, 비언어적 의사소통의 부족, 그리고 사회적 소수자에 대한 무관심 등의 부정적인 측면을 동반할 수 있다고 우려하였다. 이러한 결과는 메타버스의 잠재적인 교육적 가치를 인정하면서도, 그 활용에 있어 신중함과 윤리적 고려가 필요함을 시사한다. 논의 및 결론: 메타버스의 교육적 활용에 대한 체계적 접근과 윤리적 교육의 필요성이 강조되었다. 메타버스가 교육의 혁신적인 도구로 자리매김하기 위해서는 기술의 발전과 함께 윤리적 기준과 교육적 규범을 명확히 하고, 현장 교육자들의 신뢰와 실질적인 활용 방안을 마련해야 한다.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze educators' perceptions of the educational use of the metaverse and explore its characteristics, educational value, and social issues. The primary objective was to understand the impact of the metaverse on educational settings and to consider educational approaches based on these insights. Method: The study analyzed qualitative data collected from focus groups involving 10 educational researchers and practitioners who participated in the <Metaverse Education Leaders Training Program> conducted online at OO University. Results: Participants evaluated the metaverse as having positive educational values, such as enhancing creativity, overcoming spatial and temporal limitations, and providing diverse experiences. However, they expressed concerns about potential negative aspects, such as identity confusion, lack of non-verbal communication, and indifference towards social minorities. These results suggest that while acknowledging the metaverse's potential educational value, caution and ethical considerations are necessary in its use. Conclusion: The need for a systematic approach to the educational use of the metaverse and ethical education was emphasized. For the metaverse to become an innovative educational tool, it is crucial to clarify ethical standards and educational norms alongside technological advancements, as well as practical utilization strategies that earn the trust of field educators.
