This study aimed to explore the reciprocal relationship between academic enthusiasm and smartphone dependency during the transition from childhood to early adolescence, using an autoregressive cross-lagged model. The sample included 2,437 children (1,221 boys, 50.1%) from the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Study. Data were drawn from 5th and 6th grade (elementary school) and 7th grade (1st grade of middle school) students to analyze their developmental trajectories of academic enthusiasm and smartphone dependency. The following results were obtained. First, the goodness-of-fit of the final model was verified to be acceptable, with CFI = .919, TLI = .900, and RMSEA = .065. Second, in terms of autoregressive effects, both academic enthusiasm and smartphone dependency exhibited sustained stability across the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. Third, a bidirectional relationship between academic enthusiasm and smartphone dependency was substantiated through cross-lagged effects. These findings suggest the need for comprehensive, bidirectional interventions that foster academic enthusiasm and reduce smartphone dependency in children and adolescents.
