Contextual Understanding of Geriatric Counseling Experiences Among Senior Counseling Volunteers: A Grounded Theory Approach

This study examined the counseling experiences of senior volunteers working with older clients using Grounded Theory as the methodological framework. Focus group interviews were conducted with 10 senior counseling volunteers, interviews with two participants for more detailed insights. The data were systematically analyzed using the grounded theory approach, considering causal conditions, contextual and intervening conditions, strategies of action/interaction, and outcomes. The several key challenges in counseling older adults, including limited accessibility, difficulties in building rapport, and resistance to counseling. These issues were primarily linked to the cognitive and physical vulnerabilities of aging, as well as the psychological distress by older adult clients. Despite these demonstrated, acceptance and professionalism helped their enhanced emotional wellbeing, healthier and more vibrant lives. Furthermore, the study highlighted the need to boost counselors’ professional pride, policy support, and children, which contribute to more effective counseling outcomes. These findings insight s for advancing geriatric counseling practices.
