Braille Usage Ability of Adults With Visual Impairments in Korea

연구 목적: 국내 시각장애 성인의 점자 사용 능력 실태를 조사하였다. 연구 방법: 본 연구 대상은 국내 시각장애 성인중 점자를 사용하는 20세부터 69세에 해당하는 시각장애인 268명이었다. 검사자 15명이 2023년 9월 7일부터 11월 14일까지 진행하였다. 검사 도구는 점자 받아쓰기, 점자 읽기 유창성, 점자 읽기 이해의 3개 소검사로 구성되었다. 점자 받아쓰기 검사는 낱말과 문장으로 총 26문항으로 구성하였으며, 점자 읽기 유창성 검사는 2종류의 글을 읽고 1분간 읽은 음절수를 산출하였고, 점자 읽기 이해 검사는 5개의 지문, 20개의 문항으로 구성하였다. 연구 결과: 3개의 소검사에 모두 참여하여 점자 사용 능력의 총합 등급을 산출할 수 있는 268명의 자료를 분석하였다. 결과는 점자사용능력의 총합 등급을 4-3-2-1수준으로 등급화하여 분포를 제시하였다. 수준 등급 분포 비율은 4수준(우수) 14.9%, 3수준(보통) 45.5%, 2수준(기초) 29.9%, 1수준(기초 미달) 9.7%로 나타났다. 결론: 2수준 이하가 전체 39.6%를 차지하여 점자를 사용하는 시각장애 성인 중 점자 사용 능력을 일상생활에서 원활하게 사용하기 어려운 사람이 매우 많다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 이에 시각장애 성인의 점자 사용 능력 향상을 위한 교육적, 사회적, 정책적 방안을 논의하였다.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the status of Braille usage skills among visually impaired adults in Korea. Method: Two hundred sixty-eight severely visually impaired adults nationwide, aged 20 to 69, who used Braille participated in the study. Fifteen inspectors conducted the study from September 7 to November 14, 2023. The test tool consisted of three subtests: Braille dictation, Braille reading fluency, and Braille reading comprehension. The Braille dictation test consisted of a total of 26 words and sentences, the Braille reading fluency test required reading two types of texts and calculating the number of syllables read per minute, and the Braille reading comprehension test consisted of 5 passages and 20 questions. Results: Data from 268 participants who completed all three subtests and whose total Braille usage ability could be calculated were analyzed. The results presented a distribution of total Braille usage ability graded on a 4-3-2-1 scale. The level distribution ratio was 14.9% at level 4 (excellent), 45.5% at level 3 (average), 29.9% at level 2 (basic), and 9.7% at level 1 (below basic). Conclusion: Levels 2 or lower accounted for 39.6%, indicating that many visually impaired adults who use Braille struggle with Braille skills in their daily lives. In this regard, discussions on educational, social, and policy issues were presented.
