사회과 교실 수업의 변화에 대한 사례 연구

A Qualitative Case Study of the Changes in the Social Studies Clssroom Instructions

본 연구는 사회과 교실 수업의 변화를 교사 변화의 측면에서 이해하고자 한 질적 사례 연구이다. 연구를 위해 선정된 사례 교사는 교실 수업에서 변화를 지향하는 한 중학교 사회과 교사였다. 연구를 위한 자료는 새로운 교육과정이 처음 시행되는 첫 학기 동안 사례 교사와의 심층 면접과 수업에 대한 참여 관찰을 통해 수집하였다. 자료 분석의 결과, 사례 교사는 새로운 교육과정의 도입을 맞아 자신의 교실을 변화시킬 변화의 전략을 보유하고 있었으며, 그 전략에 따라 교실 수업을 실제로 변화시키고자 노력하고 있음이 드러났다. 그러나, 교실에서 실제로 구현된 수업은 교실 수업에 대한 교사 자신의 이상에 비추어 제한적인 변화였다. 이렇게 한 사회과 교사가 새로운 교수 전략에 따라 교실 수업의 정화된 틀을 바꾸고자 했던 교실 수업 변화의 시도는, 정책의 변화에 따른 ‘제도적 지원(institutional supports)’을 기반으로 개별 교사가 자신의 ‘교과 교육 지향성’을 실현하고자 노력한 결과였다. 즉, 사회과 교실 수업 변화의 시도 속에는 의미 있는 수업을 추구하고자 하는 ‘교육성’과 제한된 여건 하에서 최소 비용과 최대 효과를 추구하는 ‘효율성’이 복합적으로 작용하고 있었다. The purpose of this study is to investigate how and in what contexts social studies classroom instructions were changed and to understand what the meaning of the changes of instructions to the social studies teacher was. In order to answer these questions. I carried out a qualitative case study on a social studies teacher at a middle school in Seoul. Data were gathered through participant observations and in-depth interviews during one semester in which the 7th curriculum was implemented for the first time. Data were analyzed and interpreted through naturalistic methods. The main findings are the teacher had special strategies for changes and sought for changes his own social studies classroom instructions. But, the realized changes in his instructions were limited from the perspectives of his ideal ones. In conclusion, I found that he tried to change the patterned frameworks of instruction as a results of his ‘Optimization’ under the environmental constraints. The teacher had his own ‘view of the education’ and this view interacts with environmental constraints and supports. This study shows that even the limited changes in the educational environments such as changes in the curriculum or changes of the textbooks could be taken advantage of by a teacher who has his own educational view. On the other hand, this study shows the importance of environmental changes for the change of the social studies classroom instructions.
