한국전래동화 그림책에 등장하는 주인공의 복장을 통해 본 문화적 신뢰성에 관한 연구

A Study of Cultural Authenticity Through the Main Characters in Picture Books of Korean Folk Stories

이 연구의 목적은 그림책으로 만들어진 한국전래동화가 우리의 전통 문화를 어린 독자들에게 제대로 전달하고 있는지를 알아보는 것이다. 이 목적을 위하여 단행본으로 출판된 한국전래동화 30권을 수집해서 그 책에 나오는 54명의 주인공들의 복장을 분석했다. 분석 결과, 한국에서 출판된 그림책으로 만들어진 한국전래동화는 문화적 신뢰성 (cultural authenticity)을 나타내는데 실패하고 있음을 보여주었다. 아동문학의 그 어느 장르에서보다도 한국 전통문화를 확실하게 드러내야하는 한국전래동화이지만, 문화적 신뢰성을 줄 수 없을 뿐만 아니라, 좋은 그림책을 만드는데 가장 기본인 신중성과 일관성도 없이 그려져 있었다. 양질의 한국전래동화 그림책을 선택하려면 교사와 부모는 문학성과 예술성 뿐 만 아니라 문화적인 신뢰성을 줄 수 있는 한국전래동화 그림책을 선택해야 한다. 그러므로 문화적 신뢰성 측면에서 고려해야 할 전래동화 선택 기준을 제시한다.

Generally speaking, the character s in Korean folk stories are expected to represent Korean traditional culture. The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural authenticity of Korean folk stories. This has been accomplished by analyzing the 54 main character s in 30 picture books of Korean folk stories for children. The result of this study is that picture books of Korean folk stories for children are not culturally authentic because of inaccuracy and inconsistency in the description of their Korean traditional costumes. Possible reasons for inaccuracies and inconsistencies in representing Korean traditional culture were mentioned for the purpose of providing more quality books for our children. Finally, for teachers and parents, tips on selecting culturally authentic quality books were suggested.
