서구 그림책에 나타난 전쟁

An Analyzation of the theme 'war' in the translated picture books

본 연구의 일차적 목적은 서구 그림책에서 전쟁이 어떻게 묘사되어 있는가를 분석하는 것이다. 이는 주제의 단순화 내지 일반화가 불가피한 그림책이라는 한정된 형식을 통해 주제가 아이들에게 어떻게 전달될 수 있는가를 알아보기 위함이다. 이때 직접적으로 전쟁을 다룬 13종의 번역 그림책이 분석대상이 된다. 분석 결과에 따르면 많은 그림책들이 중점을 두어 보여주고 있는 것은 참혹한 전쟁의 모습이며, 이에 반해 원인과 해결 방식에 대해서는 묘사가 포기되거나 옛이야기 내지 우화 형태로 제시된다. 아울러 많은 경우 현실에서는 불가능한 방식으로 전쟁이 해결되는 모습이 그려지는데, 이는 어린이라는 독자 대상을 고려하기 때문에 일어나는 현상으로 파악된다.

The purpose of this study is to analyse how the theme 'war' is described in western picture books which are in Korea translated. 13 titles that deal directly with the theme are found and objects of this analyzation. The theme 'war' is considered as somewhat difficult one for young reader because of its complexity and cruelty. It is assumed that the form picture book brings the theme in certain ways to simplification and generalization in both text and pictures. My points in question: How appear such simplification and generalization and which messages could get the young readers from them. A half of the picture books keep silent about the causes of the war. It means that they are so complex to simplify and generalize. Almost all the picture books describe the phenomena of the war, its cruelty and brutality. It shows that it is rather easy for picture books to approach to the theme phenomenally. A half show the settlement and solution of the war, where especially children play an important role. It is impossible in the real world. It can be explained as a characteristic of children's literature. My conclusion: To simplify and generalize is inevitable in the picture books, but it shouldn't mean easy approach to the theme.
