권장도서의 선정 현황에 관한 연구

An Analysis of the Selection of Recommended Book Lists in South Korea

본 연구는 우리나라에서 행해지는 권장도서의 선정현황을 살펴보기 위하여 출처가 명확하며 일정한 주기성을 가지고 권장도서를 발표하는 16개 기관을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 인터뷰 결과는 권장도서 목록의 발표, 보급, 구성, 내용, 선정의 항목별로 분류하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과 권장도서의 선정과정은 각 기관의 성격에 따라 특징을 보이고 있었으며 여러 가지 문제점이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 현 권장도서 선정의 문제점을 찾아 체계적인 권장도서 목록의 필요성을 알리며 바람직한 권장도서 목록의 제작 방향을 마련하는 데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the current selection status of recommended book listings in mainly South Korea. Their sub-categorized questions as following 1) how is the lists production status. 2) Second, how are the lists circulated and for whom? 3) how are the lists organized? 4) what are the contents of the lists? 5) how are the lists selected? The subjects for this research which were 15 institutions or organizations which published or announced recommended book listings were interviewed. The results from the interviews were analyzed according to different categories for specific purpose. The results for this study are listed as following. First, recommended book lists were found to be released from a various fields of institutions and organizations including schools, publishers, government, bookstores, book rental company, private organizations, and the press. The lists have started to be released since 1968. Specifically, in recent years, the interest for the recommended books have increased significantly and their production as well. The release period of the recommended book lists were varied, however; once a year was the majority case, making 56.25%. Second, the recommended book lists for young children are small portion relatively comparing to them elementary school students. The distribution media of the recommended book lists were varied including physical paper production and internet web sites. Periodic booklet-wise independent volumes were most frequently used. Amount of circulation production volumes were ranged from 1,000 to 60,000. and were the top two lists release institutions in terms of the volume quantity. Third, the recommended book lists were found to be organized mainly according to age and literary genre and field, however; details of the organizations were radically different according to each institutions or organizations. Fourth, most of the book lists have contained titles, authors and publishers of the books in common. But book reviews, book selection policies and name of selectors were a few of those items not indicated consistently throughout the listings. Even for the book lists having book reviews, most of them were consisted of only two to four sentences of story summaries and even less or none brief comments on critics or analytical reviews. Lastly, the book list selections were found to be critically more focused on the newly released books. The quantities of selected book items were varied from four to 400 items of books a year. Selectors of the book lists were mainly by a single professional or expert in different area from external of the institution instead of the organized selection committees from internal. In the most cases, specific book selection policies did not even seem to exist, and tended to be vague and not clear. Methods for the book list selection were tending to be different according to the types of selectors.
