알파벳 북은 어린이가 경험하는 첫 번째 도서의 장르 중 하나이다. 알파벳 북의 성격은 그 이름이 보여주고 있다. 이 연구는 최근에 출판된 영어권의 알파벳 북의 성격을 탐색하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 알파벳 북의 목적은 처음 그것이 출현했을 때 보다 훨씬 더 다양하고 복잡해지고 있다. 최근 출판되는 알파벳 북은 즐거움과 교수를 결합하고, 정보를 전달하고, 알파벳 북 자체의 규칙에 도전하고 상상력을 자극한다. 매우 융통성 있고 내용에서는 거의 제한이 없는 장르지만 알파벳 북의 정체성은 그것이 알파벳 체계를 기초로 하고 있는 데에서 찾을 수 있다. 이 연구의 결과는 국내 작가들이 다양한 독자를 대상으로 하여 글자 책을 창작하는데 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

Alphabet books are among the first genres that children experience. The nature of an alphabet book is suggested by its name. This paper is aimed at exploring the characteristics of alphabet books published recently. The results show that the purpose of alphabet books seem to be much more complicated than they at first appeared.. The books often combine the roles of delighting and instructing, convey information, challenge the rules of the alphabet book itself and appeal to the imagination. While this is a genre dominated by flexibility and the content is open to an almost limitless number of subjects, it is emphasized that as far as alphabet systems are grounds for organization, the letters and the element that the letters represent should be well attached. The findings of this study may encourage Korean artists to create Korean alphabet books in a way to appeal to a diverse range of reader.
