앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림책 속 등장인물의 '상상'의 구조 및 의미 탐색

The Structure and Meaning of 'Imagination' of Anthony Brownes Characters in Picture Books

본 연구는 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림책 속에 나타나는 등장인물의 ‘상상’이 어떻게 표현되고, 어떤 의미를 가지는지 알아보고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 앤서니 브라운이 직접 글을 쓰고 그림을 그린 그림책 중 상상하기의 내용이 나타나고 있는 15권을 선정하여 분석하였다. 앤서니 브라운의 그림책에 나타나는 ‘상상’을 분석하기 위하여 상상의 3차원적 구조모형을 바탕으로 상상의 원인, 상상의 대상, 상상의 표현 방식 및 결과, 상상이 주는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 상상은 내적 요인과 외적 요인에 의해 시작되며, 상상의 주체에게 의미 있는 인물이나 공간이 상상의 대상으로 선택되고 있었다. 상상의 표현은 주로 외형적인 변화가 많았으며, 다른 대상과 조합되는 형태도 있었다. 상상은 맥락과 정서를 통합하여 일관성 있는 흐름을 갖추고 구체적으로 표현되었지만, 현실적으로 실현될 가능성은 낮았다. 앤서니 브라운의 그림책에 나타나는 상상은 개인적인 차원에서 나타나고 현실에 기반을 두고 표현되고 있었으며, 등장인물의 인지, 행동이나 정서에 영향을 주고 있었다.

The aim of this study was to determine how the 'imagination' of the characters in Anthony Browne's picture books is expressed and what it means. For this purpose, 15 books were selected and analyzed, which were the contents of imagination among the picture books written and painted by Anthony Brown. To analyze 'imagination' in Anthony Brown's picture books, the cause of imagination, object of imagination, expression method and result of imagination, and influence of imagination were analyzed based on the three-dimensional structural model of imagination. The results of the analysis show that imagination is started by internal and external factors, and meaningful characters or spaces are selected as objects of the imagination for the subject of the imagination. The expression of imagination was mainly a change in appearance, and there was a form combined with other objects. Imagination was expressed in a concrete and consistent flow by integrating context and emotion, but it was unlikely to be realized realistically. The imagination in Anthony Brown's picture book appeared on a personal level, was expressed based on reality and influenced the characters' cognition, behavior, and emotion.
