Design for development of a medical humanities program based on parallel charts in narrative medicine

With advancements in modern medicine, the role of medical humanities has gained global significance, particularly within medical education. Korean medical schools increasingly recognize the need to integrate and harmonized medical humanities with basic and clinical sciences to cultivate empathetic physicians. However, systematic instructional design for developing medical humanities programs remains limited. Addressing this gap, this study develops a medical humanities program utilizing Jones and Richey’s Rapid Prototyping Instructional System Design (RP-ISD) model, which facilitates iterative and flexible development suitable for the dynamic needs of medical education. The program is grounded in Rita Charon's Parallel Chart methodology from narrative medicine, which encourages medical students to document patient narratives alongside traditional clinical data, fostering empathy and reflective practice. This design supports students in developing a more holistic understanding of patient care. Intended for use within clinical clerkships, this program provides a framework that seamlessly integrates medical humanities into clinical education, enhancing students' empathy, narrative competence, and commitment to patient-centered care.

현대 의학과 의료에서는 의료인문학에 대한 요구와 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 의료인문학 교육의 중요성과 필요성은 의학교육의 세계적인 흐름이며, 한국의 의과대학 역시 기초의학, 임상의학, 의료문학의 조화와 통합된 의료인문 교육을 강조하고 있지만 체제적 교수설계에 따른 의료인문 교육 프로그램 개발에 대한 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 이와 같은 의료인문학 교육의 중요성과 필요성으로 인하여 체계적·과학적 설계 모형 중 Jones와 Richey의 래피드 프로토타입 교수체제에 따라 의료인문 교육 프로그램을 개발을 위한 설계를 하고자 한다. 의료인문 수업모형의 핵심 이론과 교육 모듈로는 리타 샤론이 개발한 서사 의학의 평행 차트에 기반한다. 개발된 프로그램은 의과대학 임상실습과정의 실제 수업에 실행·적용하는 것을 목표로 한다.
