데이비드 위즈너의 글 없는 그림책에 나타난 환상 구현 방식 연구: 데페이즈망 기법을 중심으로

Research on the implementation of fantasy in wordless picture books by David Wiesner: focusing on the technique of dépaysement

글 없는 그림책은 그림을 중심으로 작가의 상상과 환상의 서사를 담아내는 유아 문학 장르 가운데 하나이다. 따라서 독자는 글 없는 그림책에서 환상의 세계로 이끄는 작가의 독특한 그림 표현방식을 이해함으로써, 글없는 그림책에 나타난 다양한 환상 구현방식을 이해할 수 있게 된다. 특히, 데이비드 위즈너는 현실과 환상의 세계를 자유롭게 넘나들며 작가만의 고유한 방식으로 상상과 환상의 서사를 만들어 내는 글 없는 그림책 작가로 널리 알려져 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 데이비드 위즈너의 글 없는 그림책의 대표작으로 알려진 『이상한화요일』(2002), 『자유낙하』(2007), 『이봐요! 까망씨』(2014), 『구름공항』(2017), 『내가 잡았어!』(2018), 『시간 상자』(2018)에 나타난 환상 구현방식을 이해하기 위해, 초현실주의에 기저를 두고 있는 ‘데페이즈망(Dépaysement)’ 기법을 중심으로 그가 어떻게 그림만으로 환상을 구현해 내는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저, 데페이즈망의 개념적 정의 및 유형과 특성 그리고 환상(Fantasy)에 관한 개념적 정의와 특성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 이후 Suzi Gablik(2001)이 정리한 데페이즈망 표현 기법을 중심으로 데이비드 위즈너의 글 없는 그림책에 나타난 데페이즈망 표현 기법들을 분석하였으며, 데페이즈망 표현 기법과 관련된 환상 요소가 환상 구현방식에 어떠한 의미를 갖는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 글 없는그림책이 갖는 환상성과 문학성의 다양한 이해를 위한 가능성을 되짚어 본 연구라는 점에서 유아 문학 교육적 의의와 가치가 있다.

Wordless picture books are a genre of children's literature that revolves around the artist's imagination and fantasy, captured through illustrations. Therefore, by understanding the artist's unique expression of their imagination through the illustrations, readers can understand the various ways in which fantasy is realized in wordless picture books. In particular, David Wiesner is widely known as a wordless picture book author who freely navigates between reality and fantasy to create his own unique narrative of imagination and fantasy. In this study, we aimed to explore how David Wiesner realizes fantasy through his wordless picture books, including his representative works such as “Tuesday”(2002), “Free fall”(2007), “Mr. Wuffles!”(2014), “Airport”(2017), “I got it!”(2018), and “Flotsam”(2018), focusing on the technique of “dépaysement” rooted in surrealism. To do this, we first examined the conceptual definition, types, and characteristics of “dépaysement,” a technique based on surrealism, and the conceptual definition and characteristics of fantasy. Next, we analyzed David Wiesner's use of “dépaysement” in his wordless picture books, focusing on the expression techniques of “dépaysement” identified by Suzi Gablik(2001). Finally, we explored how fantasy elements related to the expression techniques of “dépaysement” contribute to the realization of fantasy in wordless picture books. This study has educational significance and value in children's literature education as it sheds light on the diverse understanding of fantasy and literature inherent in wordless picture books.
