그림책에 나타난 생명 의식

The Life Concepts in Children's Picture Books

본 연구는 어린이 그림책에 생명이 어떻게 묘사되어 있으며, 나아가 어린이들에게 내면화되어질 수 있는 생명 존중 사상이 무엇인지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구의 대상은 직접 또는 간접으로 생명을 다룬 12종의 그림책이며, 생명의 의의 및 생명존중의 근거와 함께 ‘생명의 시작’, ‘생명의 파괴’, ‘생명의 회복’이라는 관점에서 그림책의 의미가 분석되었다. 연구대상 그림책은 어린이로 하여금 ‘생명 그 자체’에 대한 자각을 할 수 있도록 도와주며, 그 어떤 작은 생명도 소중함을 보여주고 있으며, 산업개발의 명목 아래 인간을 비롯한 뭇 ‘생명이 파괴’되는 모습을 통해, 모든 생명체가 운명공동체임을 보여주고 있다. 또한 그림책은 어린이에게 자연과 생명의 소중함을 느끼고 ‘생명의 회복’을 추구하며 함께 살아나갈 바를 보여주고 있다. 자연과 생명에 관한 그림책을 접함으로써, 어린이는 생명을 지닌 자연 만물이 “나”와 함께 살아가는 운명공동체임을 인식하고 자연의 아름다움과 소중함을 느끼며 나아가 “공존”과 “공생”의 삶에 대한 이해를 키울 수 있는 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to find out how life is described in children's picture books. Furthermore, this study aims at examining whether those picture books can help children internalize respect for life through the theme of life. 12 children's picture books were examined here, which, directly or indirectly, deals with the concepts of life. Firstly, this study looked into the significance of life and the rationale of respect for life. Secondly, the concepts of life described in children's picture books were examined by the viewpoint of 'the beginning of life', 'the destruction of life' and 'the restoration of life'. From the aspect of 'the beginning of life', the subjects can help children imagine new life and show even a small life is precious. Showing images where human lives is destroyed for the sake of industrial development, those subjects tell us that all creatures form a community of fate, regarding 'the destruction of life'. Concerning 'the restoration of life', those subjects think about how to live together with the nature, awarding the preciousness of the nature and life. Therefore, children can feel the beauty and preciousness of the nature, as part of the community of fate, and further lead a life of "coexistence" and "symbiosis" through reading picture books about the nature and life.
