그림책에 나타난 ‘전쟁’의 이미지

The Portrayals of War in Picture Books

최근 다양한 전쟁 관련 그림책 출판이 증가하고 있다. 양질의 그림책은 전쟁에 대한 사고를 바꾸는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이에 그림책에 나타난 ‘전쟁’의 이미지는 어떠한지 알아보고자, 총 31권의 전쟁 그림책을 대상으로, 장르, 전쟁 배경, 주인공, 전쟁 관련 용어, 전쟁의 원인과 결과를 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석한 그림책은 일반픽션보다는 주로 제2차 세계대전을 배경으로 하는 역사픽션이 많았으며, 주인공은 아동이 어른보다, 여아가 남아보다 많았다. 가장 많이 사용된 주요 용어는 ‘전쟁, 죽음, 군인, 총, 군대’였으며, 이와 관련된 다양한 용어가 전쟁, 정서, 무기, 군인, 상해/죽음, 장소 영역에서 구체적으로 묘사되었다. 전쟁의 결과 주인공은 죽음, 헤어짐, 구속/속박, 빼앗김 등을 경험하였다. 그림책에 나타난 전쟁은 파괴적이며, 인류에게 회복하기 어려운 고통과 슬픔을 가져오는 두려운 존재로 묘사되었다.

The number of published picture books about war is increasing. The purpose of this research is to identify messages of war in the picture books. Thirty one picture books were analyzed for this study. Genres, settings, and characters, the descriptions of war-related words and the causes and consequences of war described in picture books were analyzed. More historical fiction than general fiction was identified. The setting of most of these historical fiction books is World War II. The main characters are more children than adults and more girls than boys. The war-related words were described in the categories of war, emotion, weapon, soldier, injury/death, and place. The war resulted in death, separation, restriction, and plundering. The picture books of war give messages to young readers the suffering of human beings and headiness of war.
