Characteristics and Cultural Meanings of Translated Picture Books in Korea

본 논문의 목적은 번역 그림책을 시대별로 분류하여 그 특징과 문화적 의미를 파악하는데 있다. 1990년까지 번역 그림책의 정착기, 2000년까지 번역 그림책의 번성기, 2001년 이후를 번역 그림책의 세계화로 정의한다. 번역 그림책의 정착기에는 일본과 서구의 우수한 그림책이 소개되었다. 그림과 글의 적절한 배합으로 전달하는 이야기가 낳는 교훈과 감동, 호기심 충족이 그 시대의 문화적 요구로 파악된다. 번역 그림책의 번성기에는 세계 곳곳의 그림책, 여러 형태의 그림책, 그리고 다루지 못할 주제가 없는 그림책의 넓은 영역을 보여 주었다. 그림책의 내용과 형태의 다양성은 허용과 다름에의 관용을 의미하며, 국제화 시대를 맞이한 시대문화다. 2000년대 번역 그림책은 글 없는 그림책과 패러디물의 양산으로 특징된다. 포스트모던(post-modern)이라는 시대문화, 즉 문자에서 그림으로의 무게 중심 변화, 글에서 말로의 중심 변화를 의미한다. 장애와 다문화라는 소수의 목소리, 생태와 인권에 대한 사회적 요구가 번역 그림책에 반영되었다. 또한 우리 창작 그림책이 세계로 나가기 시작하며 자신감 있게 상호문화교환을 이야기 한다.

This study aims to explore the characteristics of translated picture books and their cultural meanings over the last five decades which are divided into three periods: the settlement(before the year 1990), the flourishing years(1991-2000) and the globalization(after 2001). In the first settlement period, the introduction of foreign picture books were made initially from Japan, England and America. Parents who did not have opportunities to see picture books when they were young became readers themselves with their children. Series of stories as well as science books were translated to meet public curiosity of various culture abroad and thirst for scientific information. It was before the establishment of the international regulations for copyright. It was often witnessed that same books with same or different tiles were translated across publisher. Despite of the low status of translators, beautiful translation was made in some cases. They revive oral rhythm of Korean language. In the next flourishing years, it was available of a wide variety on themes and forms of picture books all over the world. Government policies were favor of domestic book markets, for example, granting gift tokens for books and enacting the regulation of libraries and promotion for reading. Public appreciated internationally awarded picture books. Audio-tapes, videos and TV series were made based on the famous picture books. In the globalization period, picture books without words or with parody manifest post-modernism. Public demands are of picture books for the minority like people with special needs or multi-cultural background. Recently it is regular to find some Korean picture books in international book fairs and exhibitions, and library collections such as the White Ravens. The world book markets acknowledge the potentiality and value of picture books by Korean illustrators.
