우리나라 그림책의 미국판 번역 비교 연구

A Comparative Study of Picture Books in Original Korean and in English Translation

번역 그림책은 원본 그림책이 가지고 있는 고유한 문화와 가치에 대한 저자의 의도를 충실히 전달해야 한다. 본 연구는 영어권 나라인 미국에서 우리나라 그림책이 어떻게 번역 출판되고 있는지 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 원본과 번역본 모두가 구입 가능한 그림책 6종으로 번역본 6권을 합하여 총 12권의 그림책을 분석하였다. 그림책은 분석 그림책의 출판 형태, 글, 그림의 세 영역에서 35개 세부 항목으로 나누어 원본과 번역본에서의 불일치 항목을 찾아보았다. 분석 결과, 번역자의 이름이 없다거나 한 출판사가 거의 대부분의 우리나라 그림책을 번역하여 번역 출판의 질에 영향을 주었다. 글은 모든 번역본 그림책에서 문장 수와 문장 내용의 변형이 있었다. 절반의 번역본 그림책에서도 그림의 삭제 및 추가가 있었으며, 주변 텍스트의 경우는 모든 번역본에서 변형이 있었다. 글과 그림에 있어서 원저자의 제작 의도가 가지고 있는 고유한 문화적 요소를 간과하는 번역 출판은 지양되어야한다. 결론으로 번역본 그림책의 문제점에 대한 논의와 향후 번역 그림책의 출판 시 고려해야할 사항에 대해 제안하였다.

The international exchange of children's literature is growing rapidly. The need to the quality picture books from various cultures gets its attention. Quality picture books from Korea gradually getting some attention by world markets and began to be translated into different languages. The original picture books and the translated picture books have their own advantages as well as limitations. This study investigates how Korean picture books were translated into English. A total of twelve picture books including six original Korean picture books and six picture books in English translation were analyzed and compared with the texts, illustrations, and publication information to find whether there were any discrepancies in translation from the original books to the target books. A checklist of thirty five items was developed to analyze the English translations of Korean picture books. Discrepancies between the translated picture books and the original picture books were found in publication information, texts, and illustrations. Even some deletions were identified in the texts and illustrations of the target books. Based on the findings of this study, suggestions in translation of picture books of different cultures are discussed.
