그림책의 시각적 수사학

The Use of Visual Rhetoric for Reading Picture Books

본 연구는 시각적 수사학을 활용하여 그림책을 해석하는 범위를 확장하고자 하는 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 언어의 수사학, 디자인 수사학, 시각적 수사학에 대한 문헌 연구를 통하여 수사학의 방법들을 정리하였다. 그리고 이 수사학 방법들을 Anthony Browne, David Weisner, Shaun Tan의 그림책 35권에 적용하여 그림책들에서 사용되고 있는 시각적 수사학 방법들을 정리하였다. 그 결과, 그림책에서 사용되고 있는 수사 기법을 생략, 과장, 열거, 대조, 점층, 반복, 직유, 은유, 제유, 도치, 패러디, 대구의 12가지로 나눌 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 제시된 시각적 수사학 방법은 그림책의 글과 그림을 함께 읽으며 의미를 찾아가는 독자들에게 해석의 방향을 제시하고 유아교사를 위한 문학교육의 내용으로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the picture books much better by identifying and defining visual rhetoric in them. The various documents referring to verbal rhetoric, design rhetoric, and visual rhetoric have been examined and considered. Especially, visual rhetoric applied and used in the 35 picture books has been studied closely. Rhetorical expressions exploited in the picture books have been divided into three parts: (1) rhetorical figures such as simile, personification, in which one kind of thing or action denotes another; (2) rhetorical figures such as hyperbole, emphasis, juxtaposition, bathos, anticlimax, antithesis, which are used to give readers the strong and vivid impression; (3) rhetorical figures such as quotation, inversion, which bring about significant changes in the sentences to attract the readers’ attention. Identifying and defining the aforementioned visual rhetoric would be genuinely helpful for the readers who struggle to read and understand written words and illustrations of the picture books.
