그림책에 나타난 곰의 이미지 연구

Bear's Image Represented in Picturebooks

본 연구는 그림책에 나타난 동물의 이미지를 분석함으로써, 동물을 바라보는 인간의 시각이 그림책에 어떻게 반영되었는지 살펴보고자 하는 목적으로 실시되었다. 본 연구에서는 특히 여러 동물 중에서도 먼저, ‘곰’을 분석 대상 동물로 선정하였는데, 이는 동서고금을 막론하고 다양한 장르의 문학에서 가장 빈번히 나타나는 동물이 바로 곰이고, 또한 곰은 인간과 대립되는 그 존재의 경계가 희미하여 인간과 자주 수월하게 존재가 뒤바뀌고, 동일시되어 나타나며, 비유나 상징을 통해 가장 밀접한 관계를 보이기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 그림책에서 보이는 곰과 인간의 관계를 중심으로, 곰을 바라보는 인간의 시각을 분석해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 곰과 인간이 상호작용을 보이는 그림책 55권을 선정하여 연구자가 마련한 체크리스트를 통해 첫째, 곰의 인물유형 분석, 둘째, 곰이 머무는 장소 분석, 셋째, 단독 개체로서의 곰의 이미지 분석, 넷째, 인간과의 관계에서 나타난 곰의 이미지 분석의 네 가지 부분으로 나누어 그림책에 나타난 곰의 이미지 분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구는 그림책의 문학 요소를 중심으로 분석하여 그림책을 문학 연구로서 접근하고자 하였으며, 그림책의 등장인물에 반영된 인간의 시각을 살펴보고자 하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This study was conducted in order to examine characters‘s types and images of bears appeared in picturebooks published in Korea. As a result of the current study, in the picturebooks, the bear appeared on the scene as a thing rather than as its real figure, and the place where the bear stays mainly was a human society, especially the cozy corner staying together with the human. And it appeared as a teddy bear in its childhood and as an animal in its frown-up. It was shown that the human feels nostalgia from animals for the pure original nature and close relationship of the former times. And the bear was said to have appeared as the following special types; that is, it appeared more often as a thing rather than an animal, as a male rather than a female and as a child rather a grown-up, personified in most cases. Among the 9 kinds of its image related to the human, it was shown mostly to be a comfort like a friend with the human at 40%, as against 12% for an aggressor or a threat, 11% for a being to help and protect the human, and 11% for a being needed for help from the human. The gender of the bear was clearly shown at 50% as the same proportion 50% for not showing it, and the age of the animal was not identified as of 72%.
