Picture Book History in the United States

미국의 그림책 역사는 다른 영역과 마찬가지로 문화 안에서 작용하는 경제적, 정치적, 예술적, 기술적 요인의 탐구를 요구한다. 본 논문은 미국 그림책의 발전 역사를 1800년대 이전과 1800년대 이후, 그리고 1900년대 이후로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그림책의 발전을 이끈 중요한 사건들로는 1900년대의 도서관운동, 전후 베이비 붐과 교육개혁을 위한 교육법의 제정, 유럽으로부터의 예술가들의 유입, 시민운동, 사설 어린이서점의 증가, 제 2 베이비 붐, 다문화 교육 정책들을 들 수 있다. 이러한 요인들은 미국의 그림책 창작과 출판, 그리고 구매를 이끌었다. 최근에는 히스패닉을 중심으로 한 이민자들의 대거 유입과 그들의 출산율 증가로 인한 인구 증가와 그림책을 읽는 성인의 증가도 그림책 시장의 전망을 밝게 한다. 그림책의 독특한 예술성과 독자층의 다변화는 ‘그림책이 무엇인가’라는 질문을 계속 상기시키면서 그림책이 우리 문화에서 고유한 예술 영역으로 자리매김하고 있음을 보여준다.

The history of picture books in the USA, like any history of a human enterprise, is a complex one that demands investigation of economic, political, artistic, and technological forces operating within cultures. This paper investigates the picture book history in the USA from 18th century to the present as followings: before 18th century, 18th century, early 19th century, 1920-30, 1940-50, 1960-70, 1980-90, and 21th century. The social factors influencing picture book publishing are those: library movement, civil right movement, the increase of private children's books store, babyboom after World War II, second baby boom in 1980th, artists immigrated from Europe, and recently, Hispanic immigrants and their high birth rate. Interestingly, more adults than ever before who are not responsible for raising young generation tend to buy picture books for themselves. Therefore, the future of picture book publishing seems to be optimistic with increasing birth rate and population in the States. Also, aesthetic feature and increasing adult readers of picture books would prove that the picture book genre has developed as an unique art form in the culture.
