그림책과 영상매체를 활용한 다문화 활동이 유아의 다문화 인식 및 인종편견에 미치는 영향

A Study on the Effects of Multicultural Activities using Picture Books and Visual Media on the Multicultural Awareness and Racial Prejudice in Young Children

본 연구는 그림책과 영상매체를 활용한 다문화 활동이 유아의 다문화 인식 및 인종편견에 미치는 효과를 알아보는 것이 목적이다. 연구대상은 S시에 소재한 A유치원과 B유치원의 만 5세아로 실험집단 23명, 비교집단 22명이었다. 실험처치는 8주 동안 1주에 2회씩 총 16회에 걸쳐 이루어졌다. 실험집단은 다문화 그림책과 영상매체를 함께 제시하였으며, 비교집단은 다문화 그림책과 학습지 활동을 실시하였다. 자료의 처리는 실험, 비교집단의 사전 검사점수를 공변인으로 하여 사후검사점 수에 대해 공변량분석(ANCOVA)을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 그림책과 영상매체를 활용한 다문화 활동이 유아의 다문화 인식과 인종편견에 유의미한 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 다문화 그림책과 영상매체를 함께 제시하는 다문화 활동이 유아에게 의미 있고 효과적인 교수활동으로 유아교육현장에서 활용될 수 있음을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of multicultural activities using picture books and visual media on the multicultural awareness and racial prejudice in young children. The research questions for this study are as follows: (1) how do the multicultural activities using picture books and visual media affect the multicultural awareness of young children and (2) how do the multicultural activities using picture books and visual media affect the racial prejudice of young children? A sample of 45 preschoolers, 7 years of age was observed for 8 weeks. During the experiment, the control group had activities using picture books and worksheets, while the experiment group had multicultural activities using picture books and visual media. In addition, pre and post tests were conducted to investigate the factors affecting multicultural awareness and racial prejudice. T-test, frequency analysis and covariate analysis were done to gauge the effect of the treatment in the experiment. The results show that (1) multicultural activities using picture books and visual media had higher scores in the multicultural awareness of young children followed by matching results in the subordinate variables and (2) multicultural activities using picture books and visual media showed a positive effect on the reduction of the racial prejudice. The results of the study suggest that multicultural activities using picture books and visual media, as multicultural education, are effective methods of empowering multicultural awareness in young children as well as reducing racial prejudice.
