루소의「고백록」을 통한 루소의 아동교육론 조명

Examination of Rousseau's Educational Thought for Children through Les Confession

루소의 「에밀」은 교육사에서 혁명적인 저서로 손꼽히며 인간 발달에 대한 통찰로 인해 ‘아동기’를 발견한 책으로 불리고 있다.「에밀」이 교육소설이기는 하지만 루소의 교육관이 순전히 허구 가 아니라 인생에 대한 성찰과 아동에 대한 관찰을 바탕으로 하였다는 점에서 그 실천적 생명력을 갖고 있다. 또한 루소의「고백록」은 경험에 대한 회상의 나열이 아니라 깊이 있는 성찰을 담고 있 기 때문에 루소 개인을 이해하는 배경지식을 넘어 연구할 가치가 있는 하나의 텍스트로 자리 잡고 있다. 따라서「고백록」을 탐구하는 것은 루소의 아동교육관에 루소 자신의 삶과 성찰이 어떤 영향 을 미쳤는지를 탐구하고 그의 철학의 의미를 보다 깊이 있게 이해하는데 필요한 작업이다. 본 연구 는 루소의 「고백록」에 기술된 일화와 성찰을 루소의 교육소설인 「에밀」에 나타난 아동교육사 상과 연결 짓는 방식으로 분석하였다. 루소의「고백록」에 나타난 아동교육적 성찰은 부적절한 조 기 독서경험에서 기인한 영유아기 감각경험의 강조, 자유를 만끽한 아동기에서 자유 놀이와 학습의 강조, 의심과 체벌의 경험으로 인한 도덕관념의 형성, 자연에서의 놀이와 생활에서 온 자연교육, 모 성에 대한 갈망에서 온 여성교육론의 형성으로 분석되었다.

Rousseau's Emile was a revolutionary work about education and his insight of human development found 'childhood' in history. Though Emile was an educational novel, it contained his thoughts on education for children based on his reflections of life and observations of children. Thus it had distinct effects on educational practices until now. In Les Confessions, Rousseau reflected on his life and insisted on his innocence against his critiques of autobiographical writing. Rousseau's Les Confessions is worth reading as a text not only to learn information about his life but also to understand his views on his life and his thoughts about society and education. This study examined the effects of his reflections of life on his thoughts about education for children by connecting episodes and events in Les Confessions with his thoughts on education for children in Emile. The results show that his experiences and views about his life in Les Confessions affected his thoughts on education for children in Emile. His reflections of his life in Les Confessions affected his thoughts on education for children emphasizing the sensual experience coming from inappropriate early reading and forming the meaning of moral education caused by unfair doubts and whipping. He mentions, the importance of free play and study as a result of having fully enjoyed freedom in childhood and natural education from having lived and played in nature, and formed thoughts on education for women yearning for motherhood.
