The Characteristics of Neighbors in Picture Books

본 연구는 그림책에 나타난 이웃의 모습이 어떠한지, 주인공과 이웃이 맺고 있는 관계는 어떠한지를 분석함으로써 그림책에 나타난 이웃의 특성을 탐색하기 위한 것이다. 분석 대상은 한국 그림책 20권과 외국 그림책 40권이었고, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그림책에 나타난 이웃의 모습은 개인보다는 집단(40권, 66.6%)으로 표현되어 있으며, 이웃이 개인인 그림책 중에는 노인이 가장 많았고(20권 중 11권, 전체의 18.3%) 아이인 경우는 2권(3.3%)뿐이었다. 둘째, 그림책 주인공과 이웃이 맺고 있는 관계는 호의적 관계가 가장 많았고(43권, 71.7%), 대립적 관계에서 호의적 관계로 바뀌는 그림책이 12권(20%), 대립적 관계의 그림책이 5권(8.3%)으로 나타났다.

This investigation aims to analyze how neighbors are characterized in picture books by looking into the description of them and the relationship between the main character and his/her neighbors. The subject of analysis consists of 20 Korean and 40 foreign picture books and the following results are found. First, neighbors appear more as a group (66.5% comprising 40 books) than individuals and when an individual neighbor appears, he/she is likely to be an old person (11 out of 20 picture books, comprising 18.3% among all books). But children appear as neighbors only in 2 picture books (3.3 % among all books). Second, the relationship between the main character and his/her neighbors is mostly amicable in 43 picture books (71.7%) and it is changed from conflict to amicabil ty in 12 picture books (20%) while it remains to be conflicted in 5 picture books (8.3%).
