미국 다문화 그림책에 그려진 한국계 미국 어린이 이미지 - 한국계 미국 어린이가 주요 인물로 등장한 그림책을 중심으로 -

The Image of Korean-American Child and Culture Reflected in the Multicultural Picture Books Published in the USA

본 연구의 목적은 미국 다문화 그림책에 그려진 한국계 미국 어린이의 이미지를 분석함으로써, 미국 사회에서 한국계 미국 어린이를 바라보는 시각이 그림책에 어떻게 반영되었는지를 조사하는 것이다. 분석의 대상이 된 도서는 미국에서 출간된, 한국계 미국 어린이가 주요 인물로 등장한 그림책 27권이다. 분석도구는 선행 연구를 기초로 하여 연구자들이 수정한 체크리스트였으며, 이에 따라 한국계 미국 어린이의 인구학적 배경과 캐릭터, 공간적 배경으로서의 한국 문화, 플롯을 분석하고 분류하였다. 연구 결과로는 한국계 미국 어린이의 인구학적 배경과 캐릭터에서 여자 어린이가 남자 어린이보다 더 많이 그려졌으며, 행동에서는 놀이 행동보다 일상생활 행동이 더 많이 나타났다. 공간적 배경으로서의 한국 문화 요소는 사회 및 생활 상징, 민족 상징이 많이 그려졌고, 한국 문화에 대한 이미지의 오류와 아시안 문화 요소 간의 중첩이 심각하게 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 다문화 사회로 변화해 가는 우리나라에서의 다문화 교육뿐만 아니라 다문화 그림책 창작에도 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.

This study analyzed the image of Korean-American children represented in the multicultural picture books published in the USA. For this purpose 27 picture books were collected through internet online bookstores, web sites and Publishers Weekly, etc. The research questions addressed demographic background and characters, spatial background as the Korean culture and plot. The classification criteria were developed based on previous studies. Results showed that 1) Female Korean-American child characters appeared much more frequently than male. 2) Korean-American children were drawn to engage in non-play activities in daily life more than play activities. 3) Inaccurate images of Korean cultural elements were represented and images of Korea or Koreans overlapped with other Asian nations’ images. This study would provide some implications for multicultural education and picture books in Korea, in the process of changing into a multicultural society.
