한국 수출그림책에 나타난 문화상징에 관한 연구

A Study of Korean Culture in Korean Exported Picture Books

본 연구는 국내독자 뿐 아니라 전세계 독자들을 대상으로 그 활동범위를 넓히고 있는 수출 그림책을 대상으로 하여 한국문화 상징내용이 어떻게 표현되고 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 KBBY(2013)에서 발표한 한국 수출도서 목록에 수록된 191권의 그림책을 선정하고, 글과 그림에서 문화 상징이 어떻게 분포되어 있으며, 구체적인 문화 상징의 내용은 어떻게 표현되고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수출그림책은 글과 그림을 통해 문화상징을 표현하고 있었으나, 생활 상징과 자연 상징이 77% 정도로 다른 상징들에 비해 비교적 높은 빈도를 차지하고 있었으며 민족상징은 가장 적은 빈도로 표현되어 있었다. 즉, 문화 상징의 내용은 특정 영역에 한정되어 나타나 다양하게 표현되어 있지 않았음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 수출 그림책에서의 문화 상징 내용은 그림책의 장르에 관계없이 전반적으로 글보다는 그림을 통해 구체적으로 묘사되어 있었다.본 연구는 아동들에게 언어 뿐 아니라 시각적인 방법으로 다양한 메세지를 전달하는 그림책에 나타난 문화 상징의 내용과 그 의미에 대해 다시 한번 생각하도록 해주며, 아동을 위한 문화적 이미지 형성 및 교육을 위해 그림책을 활용하는데 필요한 기초 자료를 제공하였다는 데 그 의의가 있다.

This study intended to look into how expressed Korean cultural symbols contained in exported picture books have broadened their readers not just domestically but globally as well. To do this, we selected 191 picture books included in the list of Korean Exported Books published by KBBY(2013), and analyzed how the cultural symbols in them are distributed and what the content of those symbols are. The outcome of this study shows as follows; Firstly, regarding the content of written and pictorial cultural symbols, the exported books show the order of life symbols, nature symbols, language and art symbols, thought symbols, history symbols, and race symbols, with generally, life and nature symbols taking up about 77%, and race symbols expressed in the least frequency. This means the content of cultural symbols are confined to certain fields, not in a large variety of areas. Secondly, the overall expression of cultural symbols is concretized mainly through pictures rather than writings regardless of their genres. This study helps infants to recognize the content and meanings of the cultural symbols expressed in the picture books that convey varied messages both in varied visual ways and in linguistic ways. This study has its meaning in offering basic data necessary for utilization of picture books to form and educate cultural images for infants.
