그림책의 재미 요소 탐구 : 유아의 반응을 중심으로

A Study on the Fun Element through Children's Responses to Picture Books

본 연구는 그림책에 대한 유아들의 반응을 통해 재미 요소를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 S시 유치원의 만 4, 5세 유아 30명을 대상으로 3년간 지속적으로 유아들이 읽어주기를 요구한 10권의 그림책에 대한 유아의 반응을 기록하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 유아독자의 반응에 근거한 재미있는 그림책의 장면은 신기하고 새로운 장면, 무서운 장면, 우스꽝스러운 등장인물의 모습, 점진적 반복을 통한 클라이맥스 장면, 궁금증의 해결 장면, 주의를 집중시키는 특징적인 그림, 기대감을 주는 플롯, 말의 독특한 표현 장면으로 나타났다. 둘째, 유아독자의 반응을 통해 나타난 그림책의 재미 요소는 공유경험에 기반한 신기함, 동물과 인간의 경계를 자유롭게 드나드는 등장인물, 긴장의 축적과 해소, 숨겨진 이야기와 드러난 이야기의 이중구조, 감정이입을 위한 시각적 화자로서의 클로즈업, 현실과 환상의 경계 공간, 글과 그림에서 재미 유발 표현기법의 상호작용성 등으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 유아가 지속적으로 재미있다고 선정한 그림책 텍스트에 대한 독자반응을 통해 재미 요소를 파악하고, 재미있는 그림책 개발의 기초자료를 제공하는데 그 의의가 있다고 본다.

The purpose of this study was to explore the fun element through children’s responses to picture books. For this purpose the participants consisted of 30 children who were four or five years of age at a kindergarten located in S city. At first, forty picture books were selected based on a picture book selecting criteria for a reading activity each week for a year. For this study, ten picture books were finally selected based on the children’s preference which continuously developed while the researcher as a teacher did the reading activities for three years. Ten sessions of picture book reading and discussion were carried out. Data were analyzed on the transcripts from the audio-recordings during the picture book reading and discussion sessions. The results show that the essential elements of fun were novelty based on shared experiences, animal and human traits that were in and out of character between the two, tension congestion and relief plot, the dual structure of a hidden story and the revealed stories, a close-up for empathy as a visual speaker, the demarcation between reality and fantasy, and the interactivity of the text and illustrations in provoking fun. The significance of this study includes the nature of fun derived from the inner attributes of picture books as well as the outer attributes of the responses from children.
