그림책 『파도야 놀자』의 파라텍스트 의미 연구

A Study on the Meanings of Paratexts in the Picturebook 『WAVE』

본 연구는 이수지의 그림책 『파도야 놀자』의 페리텍스트와 에피텍스트를 포괄하는 파라텍스트 분석을 통하여 그림책 이해에 있어서 파라텍스트의 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 페리텍스트 분석을 통해 서사의 확장, 정보 제공, 몰입 유도 등의 의미를 찾을 수 있었다. 에피텍스트 분석을 통해 그림책의 핵심적 요소인 그림 그 자체, 확장된 의미의 파라텍스트, 독자에게 자유를 주는 여백 등에 대하여 독자, 작가, 출판사의 공통된 관심을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 그림책 이해에 있어서 파라텍스트의 의미를 확장하고, 파라텍스트가 주변적 요소로 머무르기보다 오히려 텍스트를 넘어서는 핵심적 요소로서 기능할 수 있음을 드러내었다. 따라서 어린이 문학교육에서 그림책의 의미를 텍스트와 파라텍스트의 상호 역동적 관계로 이해하고, 교육적 활용 가능성에 대한 끊임없는 도전이 필요함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 한 편의 그림책이라는 점에서 한계를 지니지만, 하나의 문학작품을 다차원적 시선으로 바라봄으로써 새로운 가능성으로의 통로를 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the meanings of paratexts in a picturebook. The picturebook 『WAVE』was chosen for this study. The meanings of paratexts including peritexts and epitexts were analyzed by three researchers. First, the peritexts in this picturebook had roles of expanding the narrative, providing information, and attracting readers. Second, by analyzing the epitexts in the picturebook, it was found that the author, expected readers, and the publisher would have common interests in the "picture" which is a very important part of a picturebook. By using paratexts, the meaning of the picturebook can be expanded because the empty space of each pages can function to make readers use their imagination. Therefore, paratexts functions as a crucial component, as much as texts and pictures, in the picturebook. This study suggests that teachers and parents should be more interested in developing new and diverse methods for approaching books by not only focusing on the texts and pictures but also the paratexts.
