Ezra Jack Keats는 역사적으로 의미가 있으며 많은 아이들에게 사랑을 받은 그림책 작가이다. 그의 작품들에는 같은 아동이 반복적으로 등장하며 성장, 발달해 가는 모습이 그려진다. 작가가 그리는 아동의 발달 과정을 이해하기 위하여 Erikson의 심리사회학적 발달 이론을 적용하였다. Peter가 주인공인 그림책 5권과 Louie가 주인공인 그림책 4권에 그려진 아동을 분석한 결과 Peter가 기본신뢰와 기본불신, 자율성, 주도성, 죄책감, 근면성을 경험하는 장면들을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 정체감이 발현되는 것도 확인할 수 있었다. Louie는 또래보다 늦지만 기본 불신 상태에서 친구의 도움으로 기본 신뢰를 경험한다. Louie는 이후 차근차근 주도성을 획득하고 열등감을 느끼지만 근면성을 얻게 되는 모습을 보인다. Ezra Jack Keats는 Peter와 Louie 두 아동 모두 바람직하고 건강한 방향으로 발달하는 모습을 그렸다. 그는 작품 속 아동의 발달 과정을 통해 모든 아동이 존중받아야 한다는 그의 가치관과 함께 아동의 내적 힘에 대한 긍정, 아동의 발달에 작용하는 환경의 중요성을 역설한다.

Ezra Jack Keats is a historically significant picture book author loved by many children. Throughout his works, the characters, repeatedly appear, grow and develop. In order to understand the developmental process of the characters, the psychosocial development theory by Erikson was applied. Five books with Peter as a main character and four books with Louie as a main character were analyzed. The results of the analysis showed scenes where Peter experienced Basic Trust, Basic Mistrust, Autonomy, Initiative, Guilt, and Industry. It was also confirmed that an Identity was matured. Louie first appears to be stuck in Basic Mistrust. However, he eventually experiences Basic Trust with the help of friends. Louie, though slow, gains Initiative and feels Inferiority, but gets Industry. Ezra Jack Keats depicted both children developing in a desirable and healthy direction. He emphasizes his values that all the children must be respected through the developing process of the characters in his works. In addition, he affirms the inner strength of children and speaks of the importance of environment in a child's development.
