그림책 타이포그래피의 기호체계 연구

A study on the inventory of semiotic resources in the typography of contemporary picturebooks

본 연구는 그림책의 타이포그래피 기호 자원 목록(Machin, 2007)에 따라 우리나라 그림책 타이포그래피의 기호체계를 분석하였다. 또한 그림책 타이포그래피의 실제 의미 작용 양상을 탐색하는데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 타이포그래피는 의미를 강조하기 위해 굵기(weight), 색(color), 크기(size), 기울기(slant), 틀(framing), 형식성(formality), 다양한 표현(flourishes)등의 기호 자원(semiotic resources)을 활용한다. 다양한 기호 자원은 타이포그래피를 시각적으로 두드러지게 하여 독자가 쉽게 읽고 이해할 수 있도록 한다. 그림책의 타이포그래피는 다양한 양상으로 의미작용을 하기 때문에 이를 어떻게 읽는가는 독자의 의미구성과 관련이 있다. 본 연구는 그림책 타이포그래피의 기호 자원에 따라 실제 그림책에서 어떤 역할을 하는지 의미작용 양상을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 타이포그래피는 등장인물, 배경, 사건 전환 등 이야기 구성 요소에 대한 정보를 함축한다. 둘째, 타이포그래피는 글과 그림을 통해서 명확하게 드러나지 않는 단서를 찾아 읽게 하는 작가의 의도를 암시하는 정보를 함축한다.셋째, 타이포그래피는 실제적인 감각을 동원하여 해석하도록 유도하여 독자가 그림책 읽기에 적극적으로 참여할 수 있도록 한다. 결국 본 연구는 다양한 의미를 함축하고 있는 그림책 타이포그래피의 다양한 기호 자원을 인식하고 그림책 읽기 과정에 이를 적용해야 함을 시사한다.

This study analyzed the typography of contemporary picture books according to the inventory of semiotic resources by Machin(2007) which relates typography to picture books using Machin’s inventory (2007). It also explored the actual signification patterns of picture book typography and based on the results, provide basic data for discussing infant multiliteracy education.Typography uses semiotic resources such as weight, color, size, slant, framing, formality, and flourishes to emphasize meaning. Various semiotic resources are used for readers to read and understand typography easily while utilizing the effect of visualizing typography. Readers read typography by relating to texts, pictures, and paratext, within the context of a picture book. Through titles, particular words, vocabularies, sentences, and paragraphs expressed in typography, readers capture information related to the subject of the conversation, characters, background, classification between reality and fantasy, and development of events and use them as clues for interpretation of the picture book.As a result, the need to discuss the necessity of a typography reading teaching strategy from an the infant multiliteracy education perspective was raised. A typography reading strategy should be aimed at increasing the ability to accept the meaning delivered by typography critically and utilize it. The contents of the typography reading strategy were based on the communication function of typography (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), and as a specific educational activity, a language sector activity and literature related activity were proposed.
