엄마, 아빠에 대한 은유적 이미지 분석 : 만 5세 유아들의 그림을 중심으로

Analysis on young children's metaphorical images of parents as represented by young children's drawings

본 연구는 유아들이 엄마, 아빠에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 은유적인 그림으로 표현해내는지 탐색해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 만 5세 유아 24명과 Anthony Brown의 『우리 엄마』, 『우리 아빠가 최고야』 그림책을 함께 읽고 은유적 그림에 대한 이야기를 나눈 후, 자신의 엄마, 아빠에 대한 은유적 그림을 그려보았다. 이를 개별 면담 내용과 함께 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 대부분의 유아들이 엄마를 아름다운 대상, 미(美)를 상징하는 천사, 공주, 요정 등으로 나타냈고, 한편으로는 공룡, 화산과 같이 무섭고 두려운 대상으로 묘사하기도 하였다. 다음으로, 아빠의 은유적 이미지는 신체운동 능력이 뛰어난 운동선수의 모습으로 표현되는 경우가 많았고, 반면 은유적으로 표현하는 자체를 어려워하면서 아빠를 실제 모습이면서도 정적이고 무미건조한 형태로 그리기도 하였다. 이러한 결과는 현대 사회의 부모-자녀 관계의 중요성과 나아갈 방향을 찾아가기 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 이와 더불어, 유아들이 자신의 생각을 감각적이고 은유적인 방법으로 표현해낼 수 있는 역량이 있으며, 이를 위해 그림책이라는 매체가 의미 있게 활용될 수 있음을 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine children's perceptions of their mother and father and how much they are capable of painting their parents in metaphorical ways by investigating their actually painted images of their mother and father. The participants of this study were 24 children. First, we read Anthony Brown's picture books, 『My Mum』 and 『My Dad』 to the children to provide guidance on what are metaphorical images and how they are painted. And then, the children were asked to express their parents in the form of a metaphorical painting and explain their expression to us. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Most children imaged their mother as an angel or princess that looks so pretty and beautiful with many different colors. However, some children painted their mothers with the image of a roaring dinosaur or an erupting volcano. Next, in their metaphorical images of their fathers, most children drew athletes like golfers, suffers, football players and swimmers who can do what they cannot do. However, a few children painted their fathers as a person who looks like they are staying still or are dull without any remarkable personality. This study demonstrated that children are capable of expressing their thoughts in sensitive and metaphorical ways rather than just in reproductive ways, beyond the notion that children have limitations in their linguistic or artistic expression abilities. Such cognitive or artistic capabilities found here should be developed and encouraged to be used more through a variety of opportunities.
