A Charm of a Fairy Pitta (A Magic of 8 Parts of Speech in English)

언어의 가장 기본적인 문장 구성요소인 8품사는 그가 가진 다양한 형태와 기능으로 인해 그 역할을 이해하고 습득하는 것이 언어 이해의 기본이라 할 수 있다. 그동안 학교문법에서 단어의 품사를 8가지로 분류해서 전통적으로 가르쳐왔기 때문에 우리나라 영어교육도 이에 기반 해서 문법교육을 진행시켜왔다. 이와 같이 언어교육에서 가장 중요하고 필수적인 품사를 과연 대학생들은 얼마나 이해하고 활용하고 있을까? 실제로 필자가 수업시간에 품사를 언급하면 많은 학생들이 8품사에 대한 종류와 이해가 부족하고 품사의 활용을 적절하게 운용하지 못하는 경우가 많았다. 이런 이유로 필자는 이 논문에서 학생들의 품사에 대한 이해를 높이고 품사의 중요성을 알리기 위해 그 마술 같은 매력을 소개하고자 한다.

This paper aims at describing the magic function of 8 parts of speech in English. Parts of speech have their own special role to play in the sentence. Content words are regarded by many people as constituting the‘lexicon proper’. Within content words, nouns, verbs and adjectives constitute the major building blocks of English. The category adverb is treated as a rag-bag containing a heterogeneous collection of words. The role of three function words such as proverb, preposition and conjunction is to relate items to one another. And interjection is to express the emotions of participants in a language communication. Especially among them, Verbs are treated like a god in determining the overall frame of the sentence structure, and by the power of verbs nouns which usually occupy the important places of subject, object, and complement are assigned their thematic roles like agent, patient, theme, experiencer, instrument, location, goal, source, etc.
