그림책의 이중독자 문제와 고유명사: Claude Ponti의 Georges Lebanc을 중심으로

Dual Readership and Proper Nouns in Picturebooks: A Case Study on Claude Ponti's Georges Lebanc

본 연구는 프랑스 그림책 작가 Ponti의 Georges Lebanc을 분석 대상으로 삼아, 작가의 독창적 글쓰기를 보여주는 주요 특성 중의 하나인 고유명사 활용과 이중독자의 관련성을 살펴보고자 한다. 이 작품에서 고유명사는 문학적 기능과 교육적 기능이 서로 만나는 지점으로, 이를 통해 아동독자는 미학적 쾌감을 느끼며 새로운 언어표현을 재미있게 익히게 되고, 어른독자는 기발한 철자 조합에 의한 언어유희에서 언어의 탄력성과 잠재력을 발견하게 된다. 그런가 하면 상호텍스트적 관계를 내포한 고유명사는 아동독자와 어른독자의 수용 양상이 갈리는 지점이 된다. 아동문화에 바탕한 상호텍스트성을 내포한 고유명사의 의미 층위에는 아동과 어른 모두가 접근할 수 있다. 반면, 고유명사에 내포된 상호텍스트성이 어른독자만이 가질 수 있는 배경지식에 바탕한 경우, 이 의미 층위는 아동독자에게는 닫히고 어른독자에게만 열려 있는 배타성을 띠게 된다. 따라서 이 작품에서 고유명사가 이중독자를 위한 글쓰기 전략으로 활용될 때는 히포텍스트의 선택이 중요하다고 할 수 있다.

This article explores proper nouns in terms of dual address in the French author and illustrator Claude Ponti's Georges Lebanc. Dual readership consists of a child reader and adult reader. The proper nouns demonstrate Ponti's creativity and originality as a writer. In Georges Lebanc, most of the proper nouns were invented by the author/illustrator to carry particular meaning or create effects, often with phonetic puns. Some proper nouns are targeted at the child reader and the others are accessible by only the adult reader. As for the onomastic neologisms which have children as target readers, they carry out a dual function, both literary and educational. The new coined expressions with diverse wordplays make the text for the child reader pleasurable and help him/her develop his/her verbal abilities without boring him/her. When it comes to the proper nouns based on the intertextuality, they are targeted either at the both readerships or only at the adult readership. When hypotexts are related to children's culture, the intertextual proper nouns are accessible by the child reader and the adult reader. However, when only the adults have the background knowledge necessary to recognize the links between hypertext and hypotext, the intertextual proper nouns have adults as target readers: the child reader is excluded from the network of textual relations. Therefore, through the onomastic expressions, the picturebook addresses the dual audience of children and adults.
