Analysis of Gender Roles in Picture Books on the [Korean] Textbook of the National Elementary Curriculum Revised in 2015

본 연구는 2015년 개정 초등교육과정 1, 2학년 국어 교과서에 수록된 그림책 55권에 그려진 성 역할을 분석하였다. 등장인물의 성별 비중을 보면, 남성이 가장 많고, 그 다음이 중성 인물이었고, 여성인물이 가장 낮은 비율로 등장했다. 남성 등장인물은 여성보다 직업을 식별할 수 있는 경우가 월등히 많았으며 남성의 직업이 더 다양하게 그려졌다. 성별에 따른 활동내용에서는 성별과 무관하게 놀이, 여가 활동이 가장 많이 나타났으나 가사 노동 활동은 남성보다 여성에게서 크게 높은 비율로 나타났다. 대체로 남성 인물들은 성격이 입체적으로 변화하고, 성격을 뚜렷하게 확인할 수 있어 다양한 형용사로 성격 이미지가 표현되었고, 여성 인물들은 성격을 직접 확인할 수 있는 경우가 부족해 상대적으로 제한된 성격 이미지를 확인할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 초등 저학년 국어 교과서에 실린 그림책에서는 성별 출현도, 성별에 따른 직업의 유무와 직업의 다양성, 활동내용, 성격 이미지에서 아동에게 잘못된 성 역할 고정관념을 형성할 우려가 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 아동이 올바른 성 역할 개념을 형성할 수 있도록 주의를 기울여 초등학교 교과서 수록 그림책을 선택해야 할 것이다.

This study analyzed gender roles in 55 picture books contained in the Korean language textbooks for the first and second graders of the elementary education curriculum revised in 2015. In terms of the gender proportion of the characters, men were the most numerous, followed by neutrals, and female figures appeared at the lowest rate. Male characters were more often able to identify careers than women, and men were more diverse in their careers. In terms of gender-based activities, play and leisure activities were the most common regardless of gender, but household labor activities were found to be significantly higher in women than men. In general, male characters changed their personalities in three-dimensional ways, and can clearly identify their personalities, so they were expressed in various adjectives, and female figures were able to identify relatively limited character images because they were not able to directly identify their personalities. In conclusion, in the picture book published in the elementary low-grade Korean language textbook, it was judged that there was a concern that the appearance of sex, the existence of professions according to gender, and the diversity of professions, the contents of activities, and the image of personality might form a stereotype of wrong gender roles in children. It will have to take care to ensure that children form the correct concept of gender roles and choose picture book in elementary school textbooks.
