A Study on Picture Books About Gender Equality in the 'Nadaum Children Book'List

본 연구는 양성평등 그림책 목록에 포함된 그림책의 특성을 분석하여, 균형 있는 양성평등 그림책 목록을 개발하는 데 기초자료로 활용하고 양성평등 그림책 독서교육에 도움을 주고자 하는 목적으로 실시되었다. ‘나다움어린이책 목록’ 추천 도서 134권 중 86권의 그림책을 분석 대상으로 하여 교육부에서 제시한 양성평등의 네 가지 영역에 맞춰 그림책의 국가별, 내용별, 장르별 특성을 살펴보았다. 연구결과 해외 번역 그림책은 양성평등의 네 가지 영역인 자기 존중, 가정 내 역할, 직업·사회 활동, 성별 차이 이해 항목이 고르게 제시되었으나 국내 창작 그림책은 가정 내 역할과 성별차이 이해에 대한 내용이 보이지 않았다. 등장인물의 성별 출현 빈도와 등장 배경에서 남성보다 여성이 더 많이 등장하지만 직업 특성과 성별 활동 유형에서는 여성에 대한 고정관념이 여전히 남아있다. 장르별로 사실주의 그림책이 가장 많았고, 국내 창작 그림책에서 그 외의 장르는 비중이 적어 장르별 양성평등의 특성을 분석하는 데 어려움이 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 교육부에서 제시한 양성평등교육 방향에 맞춰 양성평등 그림책을 분석하였다는 점에서 교육 현장과 밀접하게 연계하여 아동의 바람직한 양성평등 인식 형성에 도움을 준다는 데 의미가 있다.

This study was conducted to be used as baseline material for developing a balanced list of picture books. As such this study investigated picture books on gender equality analyzing the characteristics of the picture books included in the list of picture books on gender equality with the goal to improve reading education. Out of 134 volumes of the recommended books on “the list of Nadaum Children Books,” this study took 86 picture books as the subjects of analysis to investigate the characteristics by the country, content, and genre of the picture books for four areas of gender equality proposed by the Ministry of Education. Based on the results of this study, translated foreign picture books evenly presented four areas of gender equality, including self-respect, roles in the family, vocational/social activities, and understanding gender differences; however, domestic creative picture books did not present the contents concerning roles in the family and understanding gender differences. In terms of the frequency of the appearance of characters’ genders and the background of the appearance, more men appear than women while vocational characteristics and the types of gender activities, fixed ideas for women, still remain. By genre, most picture books were realistic ones while in the domestic creative picture books because the other genres were the minority, there was difficulty in analyzing the characteristics of gender equality by genre. The result of this study is significant in that it helps children form desirable perceptions of gender equality, closely connected to education. This study analyzed picture books for gender equality in terms of the direction of gender equality education proposed by the Ministry of Education.
