중개성을 활용한 이야기그림책 읽기 방법 연구 -〈동물원〉의 '보는 이'를 중심으로

A Study on How to Read Narrative Picture Books Using Mediacy - Focusing on the Focalizor of 〈The Zoo〉

이야기그림책의 경우 전통적인 서사물과는 달리 ‘그림’을 통해 전달되는 이야기가 있기 때문에 글 텍스트 해석에 필요한 시점과 인칭으로 작품을 이해하는 데 한계가 있다. 본고는 글과 그림으로 담론화 되는 이야기그림책의 서술 특성에 맞는 읽기 방법을 제시했다. 즉 글 이야기뿐만 아니라 그림 이야기의 분석과 해석에도 관여할 수 있는 서술 방법이 필요한데, 본고는 서술의 초점화에 주목했다. 초점화는 이야기그림책 읽기에서 ‘보는 이’ 중심의 읽기 과정과 전략을 제공한다. 특히 이야기 그림책의 ‘그림’ 이야기가 ‘말하는 이’ 아니라 ‘보는 이’의 관점으로 전달된다는 점을 고려한다면 초점화 이론을 읽기 방법과 전략으로 재개념화하는 작업은 의미가 있다. ‘보는 이’ 중심의 이야기 읽기는 내적초점화, 외적초점화, 독자초점화의 층위에서 진행된다. 각각의 초점화 논의를 바탕으로 ‘보는 이’ 중심의 읽기 활동 내용을 제시했다. 독자는 보는 이와 그 대상의 관계를 파악하면서 다음 장면에 이어질 내용을 추측하고, 장면과 장면을 통합적으로 구성하면서 전체 스토리를 구성한다. 또한 독자 스스로 ‘보는 이’가 되어 상상을 바탕으로 이야기를 만드는 활동으로 이어질 수도 있다.

In the case of narrative picture books, unlike traditional narratives, there is a story that is conveyed through the pictures thus there is a limit to understanding the work from a point of view, and a person is required for the interpretation of the text. This paper presents a reading method suitable for the narrative of narrative picture books expressed in text and pictures. In other words, we need a narrative method that can be involved in the analysis and interpretation of not only the verbal narrative but also the visual narrative. This article denotes it as a focalization. Focalization provides a reading process and strategy centered on the ‘focalizor’ in reading narrative picture books. Considering that the visual narrative in a narrative picture book is conveyed from the perspective of the focalizor rather than the narrator, reconceptualizing the focalization theory into a reading method and strategy is meaningful. Reading stories centered on the focalizor is done based on the layers of internal focalization, external focalization, and reader focalization. Based on each discussion of the focalization, the contents of the reading activities centered on the focalizor were presented.
