The Images of Subversion in Anthony Browne's 『Gorilla』

Anthony Browne의 『고릴라』는 포스트모던 그림책의 대표 격으로 간주되어 왔다. 그의 작품이 보여주는 포스트모던 텍스트의 특징인 불확정성, 패러디, 상호텍스트성, 자기참조성, 다성성, 열린 결말 등은 주로 글과 그림의 양태(modality)의 불일치에 기인한다. 특히 그림 이미지의 시각적 암시(visual allusion)는 그 복잡성과 의미의 다층성으로 인해 해석의 어려움을 증폭시킨다. 본 논의는『고릴라』의 시각적 암시가 의도하는 바를 ‘전복’(subversion)으로 요약하였으며, 이를 입증하기 위해 다음의 네 개의 주제를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 예술작품의 패러디가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 둘째, 유명인의 시각적 암시가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 셋째, 프리메이슨 상징의 이미지가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 넷째, 고릴라와 한나의 심야 외출이 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 본 연구의 결론은 어린이가 읽는 그림책 텍스트를 평론하는 작업에 있어서 작가의 의도를 발견하려는 해석학적 태도가 평론가의 윤리적 책무와 관련되어 있음을 시사한다.

Anthony Browne’s 『Gorilla』 has been regarded as a representative postmodern picture book. The characteristics of postmodernity in his work such as uncertainty, parody, intertextuality, selfreferentiality, polyphony, and open ending are results of the modality of texts and images. The visual allusions of images, especially, amplify the difficulty of interpretation due to their complexity and multi-layered meanings. This study paraphrased the intents of visual allusions in 『Gorilla』 as a form of subversion. To this end, the implications of four themes were analyzed. The four themes in this study were the following: the parody of famous art works, the visual allusion of celebrities, the image of the freemason, and, Gorilla and Hannah’s late-night date. The conclusion of this study suggests that when criticizing picture books for children, the hermeneutic attitude to discover an author’s intentions is related to the critic’s ethical aspect.
