국공립 어린이집 교사가 경험한 육아휴직의 의미

The meaning of parental leave experienced by teachers at public daycare centers

본 연구는 초저출산 문제에 직면한 오늘날 우리사회에서 일-가정 양립을 지원하기 위해 이루어지고 있는 육아휴직제도와 보육서비스의 접점에 있는 존재로서 국공립 어린이집 교사의 육아휴직 경험과 그에 담긴 교육적 의미를 탐색해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 육아휴직 후 복직한 경기도 소재 국공립 어린이집 현직 교사 2인과 심층면담을 실시하고 수집된 자료는 질적으로 분석하였다. 연구결과를 통해 국공립어린이집 교사는 육아휴직을 통해 모성을 체험하고 어린이집 현장을 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있게 되었다. 이러한 경험 속에 담긴 육아휴직의 의미는 ‘아이의 존재에 소중함을 느끼는 시간’이자 ‘부모의 마음을 이해하는 시간’이었다. 또한 ‘좋은 동료로 성장을 다짐하는 시간’이며 ‘더 잘해내기 위한 숨고르기 시간’이었다. 본 연구는 경력단절로 간주될 수도 있는 어린이집 교사의 육아휴직 경험을 살펴보고 그 과정에서 이루어지는 교사 성장의 의미를 도출하였다는 점에서 연구의 의의를 지닌다.

This study aims to explore the experiences of public daycare teachers on parental leave and the educational meaning contained in it as a point of contact between the parental leave system and childcare services that are being implemented to support work-family balance in today’s society facing the problem of ultra-low birth rates. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with two current teachers at public kindergartens in Gyeonggi Province who returned to work after parental leave, and the collected data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study indicated that public daycare teachers were able to experience motherhood through parental leave and objectively observe the kindergarten setting. The meaning of parental leave contained in these experiences was ‘an opportunity to recognize the intrinsic value of a child's existence’ and ‘a moment to empathize with the perspectives of parents’. It was also ‘a time to pledge to grow as a good colleague’ and ‘a reflective pause to enhance future performance’. This study is significant in that it examines the experiences of daycare teachers on parental leave, which can be considered a career gap, and derives the meaning of teacher growth that occurs in the process.
