백희나의『알사탕』연작 속 침묵과 말하기

Silence and speaking in Baek Hee-na’s『Alsatang』series

백희나의『알사탕 제조법』(2024),『나는 개다』(2019),『알사탕』(2017)은 등장인물의 중복과 시간의 흐름에 따라 할머니의 죽음과 구슬이의 나이 듦, 동동이의 학교 입학이라는 사건이 서로 연결되어 있다. 세 권의 연작에서 가장 큰 사건이자 결말은『알사탕』속 동동이가 친구에게 “나랑 같이 놀래?”라고 말을 거는 부분이다. 마치『알사탕』연작 속 이야기, 캐릭터, 사건 등이『알사탕』속 동동이의 ‘말하기’가 목표였던 것처럼 보인다. 동동이의 주변 존재들은 침묵하는 존재들이었으나 말을 하며, 동동이는 말하는 존재이나 오랫동안 침묵해 왔다. 알사탕은 침묵과 말하기를 연결해 주는 매개물이다. 본 연구는 알사탕의 신비한 힘을 통해 말하지 않는 존재들의 말하기와 동동이의 말하기를 중심으로 알사탕 연작 속 존재들의 침묵과 말하기의 의미를 탐구하고자 하였다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 말하지 않는 존재들의 말하기로『알사탕』속 소파, 구슬이, 아버지, 할머니, 나무 등 말하지 못하는 존재들의 말하기가 동동이에게 갖는 의미를 분석하였으며, 둘째, 침묵이 말하기에 갖는 의미로, 침묵에서 빚어내는 말하기와 말하기의 고귀함으로 정리하였다. 연구 결과는 유아교육 현장에서 듣기와 말하기를 위한 자료로써 활용되며, 공감적 추론과 타자에 대한 윤리성을 배양하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Baek Hee-na's works-How to Make Alsatng(2024), I Am a Dog(2019), and Alsatang(2017)-are interconnected through the passage of time and pivotal events, such as the grandmother’s death, Gusuli's aging, and Dongdong's school entrance. The culmination of the three-volume series occurs in Alsatang when Dongdong asks his friend, “Would you like to play with me?”. This moment appears to be the narrative focal point toward which the series, its characters, and incidents were directed. Throughout the series, beings around Dongdong transitioned from silence to speech, yet Dongdong himself, as a speaking being, remained silent for much of the story. Alsatang serves as a medium bridging silence and speech. This study explores the themes of silence and speech in the Alsatang series. First, it examines the significance of speech from previously silent beings, such as the sofa, Gusuli, Dongdong's father, grandmother, and tree, and its meaning for Dongdong. Second, it interprets silence within speech as reflecting the nobility of expression that emerges from silence. The findings of this study provide insights into using listening and speaking as tools in early childhood education and may help foster empathetic reasoning and ethical awareness in young learners.
