종교 활동 경험이 청소년에게 미치는 영향: 한국 가톨릭교회 주일학교 활동에 대한 현상학적 탐색

The Impact of Religious Activities on Youth Experiences: A Phenomenological Study of Sunday School Programs in the Korean Catholic Church

[연구 목적] 본 연구는 한국 가톨릭교회의 청소년 종교 활동 중 하나인 주일학교를 중심으로 청소년 시기에 미치는 종교 활동의 필요성과 중요성을 살펴보고자 한다. 따라서 청소년이 경험하는 종교 활동의 역할과 기능을 탐색하고 주일학교가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하는 데 목적을 두었다. [연구 내용] 본 연구는 현상학적 연구방법을 활용하였으며, 심층면접을 통하여 자료를 수집하였다. 본 연구의 참여자는 A교구에 소속되어 주일학교 활동을 하고 있거나 활동 경험이 있는 청소년, 교리교사 그리고 청년으로 구성하였다. 본 연구를 위해 수집한 자료는 Giorgi의 현상학적 방법을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석된 자료의 결과는 다음의 다섯 가지 이론화된 주제이다. ‘학생들을 지지하는 공동체 구성원’, ‘환영 받는 장소’, ‘신앙으로 연결되는 또래 관계’, ‘삶에 필요한 기술 습득’ 그리고 ‘즐기는 공간에서 신앙 발견’의 주제를 도출하였다. [결론] 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년 시기의 주일학교 활동은 청소년의 삶에 직․간접적으로 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 청소년의 주일학교 활동은 청소년에게 교리 지식 전달뿐만 아니라 청소년의 전인적인 성장에도 기여하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과는 교회 공동체가 주일학교에 관심을 가지며 청소년에게 신앙 지식 전달뿐만 아니라 그들을 동반하며 다양한 활동과 체험의 기회를 제공할 필요성을 보여주고 있다.

[Objective] This study explores the influence of religious engagement during adolescence, focusing on the role of Sunday School in the Korean Catholic Church and its potential for improvement. [Contents] This study utilized a phenomenological approach collecting data through in-depth interviews. Participants included adolescents who are currently or previously engaged in Sunday School, along catechists and young adults affiliated with Diocese A. Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis method was applied to analyze the data, which led to the identification of five key themes: “supportive community members,” “a welcoming, inclusive space,” “peer relationships grounded in faith,” “acquisition of essential life skills,” and “discovery of faith within an engaging environment.” [Conclusions] The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, Sunday School activities during adolescence have been shown to play both direct and indirect roles of importance in adolescent life. Second, these activities support not only the transmission of catechetical knowledge but also contribute significantly to the holistic development of young people. Consequently, this study indicates the need for church communities to support youth faith formation by providing opportunities for diverse activities and experiential learning alongside catechetical instruction, thereby accompanying adolescents on their journey of faith.
