This paper analyzes the semantic and syntactic features of “只怕(Zhipa)1/2” and its evolution from the Ming and Qing dynasties to Modern Chinese. Based on prior studies on “只(Zhi)” and “怕(Pa)”, the semantic functions of “只怕1/2” are identified as [+restriction], [+emphasis], [+fear], [+dread], and [+worry]. “只怕1” often combines with nominal elements or aspect markers “着(Zhe)” and “了(Le)” to express worry about past events, while “只怕2” occurs with various subjects, positive predicates, and “是”, conveying meanings like "perhaps." The shift in dominance from “只怕2” during the Ming and Qing periods to “只怕1” in the Republican era is attributed to the influence of “恐怕(Kongpa)”, the restrictive function of “只”, and the emergence of modal adverbs in Modern Chinese.
