Objectives: Male obesity rate in Korea has been increasing, yet men are much less aware of their obesity and less likely to engage in weight loss efforts compared to women. The objective of this study was to report changes in body weight and blood pressure and to analyze adverse events (AEs) in obese men who were prescribed Gamitaeeumjowee-tang. Methods: A retrospective chart review was accomplished on male obese patients with 25 kg/m2 or higher body mass index (BMI), who were prescribed 12 weeks of Gamitaeeumjowee-tang between August 31st, 2017 and April 30th, 2020. Changes in BMI, body weight, skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, and blood pressure were analyzed before and after the program. Reported AEs were assessed based on causality, severity, and system-organ classes. Results: 50 patients (mean±standard deviation, age 36.78±9.46 years, body weight 93.59±15.75 kg, BMI 31.23±4.86 kg/m2) were enrolled. The mean total weight loss in male obese patients was 7.68±4.31 kg. The average of BMI change and weight loss rate were 8.22±4.10% and 2.66±1.64 kg/m2, respectively. Evaluated causality of AEs were mostly 'unlikely', and severity assessment showed that all symptoms were mild. Conclusions: Gamitaeeumjowee-tang may be a viable option for male obese patients to lose weight, with no serious AEs occurred. Better-designed clinical studies are needed.
