The impact of knowledge of patient safety on patient safety management confidence in nursing students: The mediating effect of critical thinking disposition

This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of critical thinking disposition in the relationship between knowledge of patient safety and patient safety management confidence. The subjects of the study were 160 third- and fourth-grade nursing students who had experience in clinical practice among two universities located in D city. The study was conducted from November 7, 2024 through November 7, 2024 using a selfreport questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were performed using the SPSS/WIN 29.0 program. PROCESS macro 3.5 program was used to verify the significance of the indirect effect of the mediator. Subjects’ patient safety management confidence showed a significant positive correlation with knowledge of patient safety (r =0.27, p<0.001) and critical thinking disposition (r=0.38, p= <0.001). The most significant factors of patient safety management confidence were critical thinking disposition (β=0.33, p= <0.001), knowledge of patient safety (β=0.19, p=0.009) and major satisfaction(β=0.19, p=0.010). Critical thinking disposition was found to have a partial mediating effect in the relationship between knowledge of patient safety and patient safety management confidence. There is a need to develop and operate a systematic curriculum that considers critical thinking disposition and knowledge of patient safety to improve the patient safety management confidence of nursing students.
