Evaluation of Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Using Transthoracic Echocardiography: 5 Case Reports

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, a geriatric change that increases with increasing life expectancy, is mostly observed in patients with myocardial diseases such as myocardial ischemia or left ventricular hypertrophy, but is also commonly observed in healthy people without ventricular disease. As people age, the early diastolic velocity of the left ventricle decreases, while the late velocity increases. In other words, diastolic dysfunction occurs with age even without specific diseases and is a factor affecting the progression and prognosis of heart failure. Currently, textbooks such as Ultrasound Examination, Echo Manual, and Clinical Ultrasound provide only schematic data in the form of pictures or formats on how to evaluate the diastolic function of the left ventricle, making it difficult to realize field-centered education. Accordingly, through this study, we aim to realize the practical evaluation index of left ventricular diastolic function evaluation through echocardiography as a field-centered case study through various stage-by-stage cases and use it as a teaching material for operating a field-centered education course in the field of new technology diagnostic examination. In addition, we aim to provide more specific information on the left ventricular diastolic dysfunction severity assessment tool, that is, cases corresponding to the severity assessment stages of normal, diastolic dysfunction I, II, III, and IV, to provide data that makes it easier to understand the left ventricular diastolic function assessment through transthoracic echocardiography (TTE).
